The anticipation of Thanksgiving weekend was high this year. I had taken an extra day off of work, was driving up to Chippewa to my mom’s, coming back to Madison for another dinner on Friday, then had a couple of days to relax…
I ended up sick Tuesday night, the night before I was to leave. It’s Sunday night as I write this and I’m just getting over this miserable cold. I really did try my best to have a good time, but those who know me know that I’m a huge whiner. :)
However, in retrospect, I felt I should reflect on the positives about these past five days…
Mom’s
I left for Mom’s on Wednesday morning, and although the body aches and sniffles were kicking in, it was a beautiful morning for a drive. The interstate was still relatively clear, which was a nice surprise. Well worth taking the day off. My sister arrived shortly after me… I hadn’t seen her in quite a while. She was getting over strep (wuss) but looked to be better. I love hanging out with her. We went to the store and got snacks for the afternoon while Mom was still at work. Pizza rolls and Egg rolls were the choices… a “roll theme” as Deann would say.
I also got the opportunity to meet Deann’s new cat, Tre. So cute… you can see pics of him here.
Thanksgiving day was wonderful… Mom was up early making chicken livers, then the rest of the food (way too much for 5 people). But it was great. She didn’t seem too stressed, and I think was able to have a little fun. I think her new job helps that a little… much less stressful than the last.
We did miss Derek though, who was in Green Bay with Angie’s family. :( That’s what you get, Derek! ;)
Dad’s
My sinuses were good in the cold, so Deann and I both left Mom’s Thursday night to go to Madison. I got up and went over to my dad’s on Friday morning. We snacked, watched the Thanksgiving classic, Groundhog Day, then had another great meal. It’s so funny watching that movie with my dad… he laughs at ever line so hard, it’s amazing that he’s actually sincere. I mean, I think it’s funny too, but I just really get a kick out of watching that movie with him. Here’s a quick link to some great quotes from the movie. Don’t wait till tomorrow to look them over… what if there is no tomorrow? There wasn’t one today…
After dinner, Deann had to leave, but Dad and I sat around and watched the Badger’s Football team kick the crap out of Hawaii for the their 9th win of the year. Not bad for a team that people picked to finish 6-5.
Badgers Basketball
Saturday night, Wisconsin played their first regular season home game against Coastal Carolina. And I was….. at home. Yes, the first home event I missed this year. But, I was lucky unlucky enough to be able to listen to Matt Lepay Jay Wilson do the play-by-play. I like Jay Wilson as a person, a TV person… but as a play-by-play guy, he’s about as vivid as the 3-D parts of Medium I’ll talk about next…
Badgers won by the way 92-54 lead by Kam with 20… that guy’s shooting the 3 really well so far this year. Landry only had 6 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists.. but he’s still the man… You can see the full box score here.
Medium in 3-D
So I borrowed 3-D glasses from my dad who picked them up at the NBC station in Madison. I had PVR’d the show Monday night and had to wait till I had the glasses to see it. I was really excited to sit down and finally watch this… the introduction with a mouth-enhanced Rod Serling was cool… but then the 3-D parts kicked in.
There was very little to be had by watching the 3-D parts with the glasses. There were some effects that made sense (like a man throwing a knife right past your head… although that even lacked the effect I thought it would have. It really seemd blurry to me, there seemed to be too much offset red that made everything unclear. I tried a few different positions and distances, but it was all the same. All-in-all, it was a good episode, story line and such, but the 3-D parts were blah in my opinion. Oh well.
Other TV
Supernatural I had PVR’d as well. This was one of the best episodes yet, as it was really really scary and had a great story to boot. The trip had Sam and Dean in Illinois conquering the spirit of an ex-doctor/torturer of an insane asylum. Sam was forced to confront his feelings about Dean being controlling, which was also interesting.
I caught the last half of the movie Stateside, with Rachel Leigh Cook who plays a schizophrenic actress who falls in love with a 18 year old in the military. I thought she was just hot, but it seems she can act too.
I’m also excited that Alias is being shown in Madison on Saturday and Sunday nights at 11:30pm on ABC. They’re working their way through the first season right now… and although I’ve seen every episode, it’s fun realizing again where the characters have been, and that Jennifer Gardner was really thin in season one.
