From GMail to iEMail

iEMailI’ve known this was possible for quite a while, but until today, I didn’t realize how cool it really could be. I installed the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox, which allows you to install User Scripts to control the functionality of different websites you may visit - as long as you’re using Firefox of course.

So, basically, Greasemonkey is an engine that you plug these User Scripts into… and you get a more customized browsing experience.

My find today was 2 User Scripts for GMail, which I use excessivly. The first script adds a “delete” button to the page (normally, delete is in a drop-down menu which is stupid), the second script alters the CSS of the page to be a little nicer - it also allows you to change the logo!

I also found a 3rd script that changed the CSS for del.icio.us. This was great right out of the box, except for that I ended up tweaking the CSS even further. Looks beatiful now!

Here’s the links you need to make it work:

  1. First, install Greasemonkey
  2. When that’s done, close and reopen Firefox.
  3. Next, install the GMail Delete Button
  4. Then, install the GMail CSS Skin
  5. After you’re done installing user scripts, restart Firefox.

If You’d Rather Use Mine
You can use my custom versions of GMail CSS Skin and Simp.licio.us

I’d go into how to customize each of these, but I really don’t feel like it. To change the logo though, you’ll need to upload your new logo to a server somewhere (135px x 66px) and change the reference to the image file in the gmailcssskin.user.js file (right click the Monkeygrease icon, click Manage User Scripts, then edit GMail CSS Skin).

Also, if you want the del.icio.us CSS file, you can get it here. Also, you should browse around the Userscripts.org site for tons of user scripts you can install easily!

Have fun!

  1. Just FYI - there’s a bug in the GMail Delete Button user script.

Basically, when you’re composing an error pops up when you type the letter ‘d’.

I’m trying to get this fixed, and will post my version when it’s done - unless the author fixes it first.

  2. Well, just realized how to fix it. Simply bring up GMail inside Firefox. Click Tools > User Script Commands > GMail Delete Button HotKey, then delete the “d” out of there so the field is blank.
