Reflection, Relaxation and Taxes
Well relaxation and taxes don’t quite go together… especially this year when it looks like I’ll be out $600. But today I seemed to take several pauses to think about things… life… where I’ve been and where I’m going.
After redesigning this site, I’ll be able to release much focus from it – besides writing posts… and hopefully be able to get up to the 5 per week I’m shooting for. I mean, because when you think of it – as long as I keep a backup of it – this will really be a record of me and my thoughts for years to come. My kids will someday have a printout of it to show to their kids. [Side note... wouldn't it be a great idea to have a WordPress Blog plugin that allows you to print all/some of your posts into kind of a journal/book format? With pictures of course...] I was watching a series on the History channel today, in between NFL and College Basketball timeouts, about prohibition. My grandfather ran moonshine in northern Wisconsin when he was a kid for $1 per trip. I’ve heard little about it except for the fact that he did it – but wouldn’t it be fun to read his blog from the 20’s?
I guess I won’t be doing anything as exciting as that… but who knows… I bet doing that at the time didn’t seem like an interesting historical story either.
Another thing I did today was print out a 4-month calendar so I could plot out my upcoming schedule. It seems that almost every single weekend between now and eternity I have something going on; whether it’s the monster truck show with Heather and her son, or a long weekend in Indiana to see the Badgers play at Purdue… After getting some initial items jotted down, I felt a little more organized. It’s amazing what writing things down can do for one’s psyche.
Overall, it was just a sense of deep reflection today. Thinking about what’s important and why. A friend once told me his goal was to be immortal… to do something in life that would make people remember him for eternity. Now, I’m sure John Wilkes Booth probably thought that too… obviously a misguided method of carrying out the thought; but the concept of simply writing a book, developing a product or a service… creating a space in the world that can only be occupied by your name… your legend…
That’s really something.
I think one’s goal in life can always be to greatly affect those around them; family, friends, and neighbors. Which I guess leads to my personal quote of the day…
~Through deep reflection, one can learn so much about themselves and their connection to the world, that there leaves no doubt in their mind what they were put here to do.~
